This making of The Spirit #23 isn’t about storytelling yet, as I don’t want to spoil the plot, so what you’ll see here is how I develop my art from the very early stages to the end. First of all, I don’t do a lot of thinking and I don’t do a lot of planning when I start a new assignment, I just draw.
Basically in this stage I have in mind capturing the proper attitude of the characters, their body language and the main layout for the panel. As my roughs are too light I had to dark these scans so you’ll be able to see something. There’s nothing much to see here, tough.
Next I did a minor adjustment on the foreground character.
As usual I never think the layout of the book, I simply work the pose drawings on all of the 22 pages as a first step, just then I’ll work the background around that.
I did the guys on background as the next stage in every page they appear.
Then I did each chick in every board they appear as well. That’s my way I to make sure each character will be consistently drawn from page to page.
As I wasn’t yet sure on what to work for the background I decided going ahead with the inks. This time I didn’t do clean-ups for this book, so the inking step went right after. Characters won’t come to live only because they’re well drawn, they need consistent facial expressions. These are the most delicate elements along with the hands as well. That’s the reason why the first element I care finishing are the faces, which I use to do with a very sharp pencil to be meticulous. In the inking process it requires a very, very sharp pen nib as well or you might run the risk of losing a lot of effort on the feelings of the characters. Here you might be able to see how my little daughter Audrey influences my style: she touched smoothly my shoulder when I was inking the nose of the girl on the right, but that was enough to divert the direction of my pen nib. I fixed it later.
